External fixation in combination with interosseus pin:
A complicated fracture of the humerus bone in a cat. We solved the problem with this method and the cat used the affected arm the following day with good comfort. Dogs and cats tolerate those devices perfectly well.
Great news: The first vaccine against Leishmaniosis:
Now a Vaccine for Your Dog against a Deadly Disease! Researchers create the first vaccine in Europe against canine leishmaniosis. After 20 years of cutting-edge research by high-level scientists, including state-of-the-art vaccination technology, a vaccine against canine leishmaniosis is now available in Spain. When taken as a course, this vaccine can provide safe, effective and long-lasting risk reduction of developing the symptoms of leishmaniosis for your dog. It is a long awaited vaccine solution, now available in our veterinary practice. Canine leishmaniosis is transmitted by sandflies. Dogs may suffer fever, hairloss, weight loss, skin sores, nail problems, aneamia, arthritis and severe kidney failure, even death. There is no cure. In Europe 2.5 million dogs are infected. Vaccinating your dog with the new vaccine means that your dog's own immune system resistance to canine leishmaniosis is enhanced.
TopWe are at the highest technological level.:
We recently incorporated the digital radiology in the imaging service of our Clinic. This is the most modern equipment for X Rays, making it completely unnecessary to develop conventional films as the picture appears immediately on a high resolution medical screen. This means a tremendous improve in quality and in environment protection because we don't need to develop and fix any conventional films. The picture of the irradiated area appears in 4 seconds and allows exact diagnosis of almost all the problems suitable to be analized by this means. TopThe newest technique in kneesurgery:
The TTA technique (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) is the best surgical solution for ruptured cranial cruciate ligament in our Pet's knees. Our Surgeon is specialized in this proceedure and uses a high quality Titanium implant wich guarantees a full recovery of the patients in only a few days after surgery. TopRecent interesting case of calcaneous fracture in a cat.:
Recently we received in our hospital a cat that fell from the fifth floor in Madrid. She presented a very complicated fracture on her left leg, breaking the bone y 5 small pieces. In Madrid only two hospitals would operate on that type of fracture, but the owner could not afford the price. In Madrid they would charge between 1200 and 1500 Euros for this surgery. The owners heard about us on the Internet, and as they were coming to Torrevieja anyway, they got in contact with us. Our prices are less than half of the estimate in Madrid. The result is, that we could repair the fracture using two cerclage wires, one intramedullary pin and a tension wire. It was almost three hours of surgery. You can have a look at the X rays. A complicated fracture because of the size of the patient and the size of the fragments. The cat is now walking perfectly normal again and we had no complications so far.
What is Leishmaniasis:
What is Leishmaniasis?
It is a severe disease caused by a microscopical parasite (Leishmania) that invades a special type of white blood cells (macrophages) and spread to different organs of the dog causing lesions of diverse consideration. If the Leishmaniasis is not diagnosticated and therefore treated in its beginning, or if the damage onto the internal organs are too important, this disease can lead to the dog’s death.
There is two forms of Leishmaniasis, one affects the internal organs (mainly the kidneys) and the other attacks the skin producing hair loss, skin’s disorders and wounds, sores on and around eyes and nose etc. There can be a combination of both forms, and the dog can also present limping due to joint damage. Sometimes the only anormality shown is diarrea or weight loss. All those clinical symptoms can be present in lots of other diseases, and it is the veterinary surgeon who has to diagnose whether the dog is suffering from Leishmaniasis or not.
How get the dogs infected by Leishmaniasis?
The parasite is transmitted through the bite of an insect similar to a mosquito, but much smaller, called a “sand fly”. It is yellow-marron coloured and has two wings of 2-3 mm. In our geographic area the greatest activity period of the adult sand fly is from May till Octuber; only the female bites and it happens usually at night when adults are active. The sand fly get infected by the Leishmania when it sucks the blood of an infected dog, and then spread the parasite when it bites other dogs.
How can Leishmaniasis be prevented?
There is a vaccine available since a few years. It has some stronger sideffects than an aordinary vaccine, but it is only 2-3 days fever and generalised pain in some pets, wich can be controled with adequate medicine. In adition, to prevent this disease, you have to protect the dog from the bite of the sand fly. There are preventive measures like installing special nets in the windows, keeping the dog inside the house during the night and using special products that repel the sand fly like spray, spot-on and special collars.
How can Leishmaniasis be treated?
Once a dog contracts Leishmaniasis there is no cure, he will always be infected by the parasite. Afortunately there are some medical treatments that allows to control the symptoms of the disease, and ensure a good quality of life for the affected dog. Once the treatment has been effective and the lesions disapeared, the dog will need a clinical followup for the rest of his life.
